An end to the most intriguing EPL season ever

Having seen my blog's layout, one probably know where my loyalties lie when it comes to football. However, I plan to be neutral when I talk about football. Unless it was a post about Liverpool, I'll try to be unbiased and give impartial comments based on the information known at the time. I seriously doubt I'll be able to do that though. Haha.

This weekend will be the last gameweek of Premier League season 2015-16. It has been the weirdest season in memory. A season that saw conventional title challengers screw themselves up so badly that the season ended up being won by a team who finished 14th the season before. It is beyond belief. If the Premier League was a computer game, this season will be regarded as a glitch. This is my assessment of what happened to the top 6 of 2014-15 and where they lie this season.

• Chelsea - Champions (87 pts), currently 9th (49 pts)

Leicester's meteoric rise to the summit of the league might be hard to put into words, but Chelsea's implosion is even harder to comprehend. What went wrong? Jose's magic had vanished or did we underestimate the power of a happy medical staff? Everything went from very good to very bad so fast. And did Eden Hazard decided to take a year off? (until recently that is)

• Manchester City - Runners-up (79 pts), currently 4th (65 pts)

To be honest, I blame the ill-timed announcement of Pep Guardiola's arrival for Manchester City's uninspiring season. They did make it to the semi-final of the Champions League and beat Liverpool in the League Cup final but from champions to runners-up and now 4th place is a sure sign of decline. They still need to win the final game to ensure Champions League qualification for next season. If not Guardiola's first season will be in the Europa League. That would be fun.

• Arsenal - 3rd Place (75 pts), currently 3rd (68 pts)

3rd place to 3rd place, a sign of stability? Well, not really. A lot has been said about how this season was Arsenal's best chance to lift the Premier League trophy for the first time since 2004. But they bottled it. Chelsea, imploded and change of manager. Man City, under-performs and announcement of new manager. Man Utd, err.. Louis van Gaal? Liverpool, wait.. Liverpool aren't supposed to be in this list. Arsenal is the only team that looked stable enough to win the league. They have the same manager and in recent years they managed, to a certain extent, challenge for the title before losing out to their more flashy rivals. With all of their rivals struggling, this has got to be their year. Nope. It was Leicester who took the chance and won, shame on you Arsenal.

• Manchester United - 4th Place (70 pts), currently 5th (63 pts)

In my opinion, Man Utd are a victim of their own successes. Years under SAF have made the fans restless and grossly impatient. Failure to immediately bring glory to Old Trafford has seen David Moyes swiftly removed and now Louis van Gaal is most likely to follow suit. They talk about it all the time but it seems Man Utd has no time for rebuilding. They want it now. Everyone seem to forget how long it took Alex Ferguson to win his first title. I really think van Gaal is a decent manager, his only problem is that people expect him to be Alex Ferguson.

• Tottenham Hotspur - 5th Place (64 pts), currently 2nd (70 pts)

The only team in this list to actually improved from last season. Pochettino has done a great job at Spurs and if they win their final game they'll be finishing above Arsenal for the first time since 1995. Okay, I'm going to be brutally honest here. I think the reason Spurs are in the runners-up position is only due to the downfall of the usual title contenders. Let's say they win their final game and got 73 points. In the past 4 seasons, 73 points will get you 4th place, 5th place, 4th place and 3rd place. Not really title contenders. But that doesn't take away the fact that, unlike others, they actually improved this season. With Pochettino at the helm and players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli, they'll at least make it to the top 4 again.

• Liverpool - 6th Place (62 pts), currently 8th (59 pts)

Liverpool oh Liverpool. I don't have much to say about Liverpool. After finding out Balotelli is no Suarez they signed Benteke. To no one's surprise, he's no Suarez either. Manager Brendan Rodgers was allowed to spend almost £80m on new signings before he was promptly sacked a mere two months into the season. A decision I still find puzzling. Why gave him so much money to spend but not giving him time? Never mind that because the amazing Jurgen Klopp is here! Klopp didn't make any signings yet so his performance as manager is limited by the players left by Rodgers. He's also still finding his way in the Premier League, so not much can be expected this season. He did managed to take Liverpool to two cup finals though. The League Cup final which Liverpool lost to Man City on penalties and next week's Europa League final in Basel. Two cup finals in 8 months, Rodgers had three and a half years yet he managed zero cup finals. Progress? I'd like to think so.

P/s: This blog's LFC theme is actually from last time. I've had it for a while and I do feel that it's a bit aged but I don't think I want to spend 5-6 hours changing it. So I'll just keep it as it is for now.
